Antigua and Barbuda: A Premier Wellness Destination
Recognition and Opportunities for a Picturesque Island
Back in July 2019, the Wellness Tourism Association (WTA) introduced a nine-point checklist that geographic areas must fulfill to be marketed as Wellness Destinations. Today, the WTA has begun to officially recognize locations that meet these criteria, with Antigua and Barbuda being the first country awarded this honor.
Colin C. James, CEO of the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority, shared his excitement: “We are immensely proud of this recognition. Antigua and Barbuda, with its pristine beaches and lush landscapes, offers a unique blend of natural beauty and tranquil environments, enhanced by a diverse array of wellness activities designed by professionals to rejuvenate both body and mind.”
According to the WTA, a Wellness Destination actively promotes well-being as an integral part of community life and the region's economy. Achieving this recognition requires demonstrating not only the presence of natural resources such as mountains, water bodies, or forests but also a strong commitment to sustainability and substantial environmental policies.
The WTA’s nine-point list includes:
- A secure and clean environment.
- Adequate sanitary infrastructure.
- Economic benefits to locals from tourism.
- Accessibility to natural resources and wellness treatments.
- Effective sustainability policies.
- Availability of wellness professionals and practitioners.
- Healthy dining options in local hotels and restaurants.
- Physical activities such as yoga, cycling, or hiking.
- An environment that promotes peace and disconnection from daily noise.
Anne Dimon, President and CEO of the WTA, emphasizes: “It is crucial for the growth of wellness tourism that consumers clearly understand what awaits them on their travels. The WTA criteria are the necessary foundation for any region in the world proclaiming itself as a ‘Wellness Destination’.”
With this designation, the WTA aims not only to grant special recognition to regions that possess these attributes but also to guide tourism boards and destination marketing organizations (DMOs) on how to enhance and effectively promote their wellness offerings.
This recognition not only reaffirms Antigua and Barbuda’s commitment to wellness excellence but also invites other destinations to emulate their model to foster tourism that respects and celebrates both human health and the planet's well-being.
